Kindiki’s Directives Amid Raila’s Protest Threats: Finance Bill Sparks Tension
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki revealed his ministry’s strategy for dealing with impending protests over proposed changes to the Finance Bill 2023 on June 11.
During a church service at Marimanti Methodist Church in the county of Tharaka Nithi, Kindiki urged all legislators to handle the bill within the confines of Parliament.
In his address to the public, the CS urged individuals dissatisfied with the outcome of the Parliament to seek redress from other institutions.
“Kenya Kwanza Alliance and opposition lawmakers should use their legislative authority to determine the fate of the Finance Bill 2023. “Anyone dissatisfied with the outcome of the parliamentary vote should appeal the decision through other institutions, such as the Judiciary,” he stated.
He indicated, however, that the government will provide the necessary security support to those who wish to express their grievances peacefully while maintaining that lawlessness will not be tolerated.
“About the ongoing discussion of the Finance Bill 2023, the government will provide the necessary security support to those who wish to peacefully express their grievances and opinions.
“Any form of lawlessness, including business disruption, destruction of public and private property, and looting, will not be tolerated,” he declared.
Kindiki insisted that Kenya is a democratic nation that values the diversity of political, economic, and social perspectives.
On the other hand, he emphasized that the government recognizes and acknowledges the important role religious organizations play in nourishing the souls of the faithful.
In addition, he stated that the majority of religious organizations in the country had partnered with the government to provide citizens with essential services such as education, health care, and water.

He noted that the government would not relent in its efforts to root out crooks and criminals hiding behind religion and using religious texts to radicalize and indoctrinate their followers.
Kindiki’s remarks came a few days after Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga on June 7 hinted at the return of nationwide protests over the Finance Bill.
Raila insisted that the Kenya Kwanza government had ignored the suffering of Kenyans, prompting his call for action.
The opposition has given President William Ruto until June 8 to withdraw the Finance Bill, failing which he will mobilize his supporters for a countrywide protest.
He also provided the President with recommendations he believed would reduce the cost of living.
Raila, speaking to the press during the Azimio Economic Council forum, argued that his suggestions would put Kenya’s economy on the path to prosperity without imposing additional taxes on Kenyans.
Additionally, the Azimio leader demanded that the President abandon the Finance Bill 2023 and apologize to Kenyans.
