Kimani Ichung’wah: How I Urged Ruto to Mend Ties with Uhuru
The National Assembly Majority Leader, Kimani Ichung’wah, has shared his pivotal involvement in fostering unity among President William Ruto, Raila Odinga, and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
During a Wednesday night interview on KTN, Ichung’wah revealed that he had encouraged President Ruto to initiate dialogue with the two leaders after engaging in straightforward discussions with him.
“Sometime last year, I had a very open conversation with President William Ruto. Earlier, I had a phone discussion with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, and I advised President Ruto to connect with him,” Ichung’wah disclosed.
“This year, I again spoke candidly with the President, urging him to reach out to former President Uhuru Kenyatta for a collaborative engagement,” he added.
The Kikuyu MP noted that his motivation stemmed from confidence in President Ruto’s administration and his vision for the nation’s progress.
He admitted that, despite holding office since 2013, he had not actively engaged with Raila until his role as the National Assembly Majority Leader reshaped his perspective.

The leadership position, he explained, provided him with a broader understanding of the country’s dynamics compared to a decade ago.
“The Kimani Ichung’wah who entered Parliament in 2013 and was reelected unopposed in 2017 is different from the Kimani Ichung’wah of today,” he reflected.
Addressing claims that he had lost influence in the Mount Kenya region as support shifted toward former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Ichung’wah instead highlighted his role in uniting the three prominent leaders.
Following their speculated handshake earlier this year, President Ruto has backed Raila’s bid for the African Union chairmanship and integrated some of Raila’s allies into his inclusive cabinet.
Additionally, President Ruto recently met with former President Kenyatta to deliberate on national matters. Notably, Uhuru had supported Raila’s 2022 presidential campaign, sidelining his then-deputy, William Ruto.
