Kiambu Senator Accuses Mt Kenya Leaders of Plotting Gachagua’s Impeachment
Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa on Tuesday, July 30, accused Mt Kenya politicians of causing divisions within the populous voting bloc and scheming to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
During a media interview, Thang’wa pointed out Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri as one of the key figures behind the plot. The Senator criticized Kiunjuri for his previous comments, which Thang’wa claimed were laying the groundwork for Gachagua’s ouster.
Thang’wa stated, “What Kiunjuri was doing was preparing the ground to impeach Gachagua, and I must say this is what most Mt Kenya leaders are doing.”
He highlighted that Kiunjuri had earlier alleged that those planning a coup were from Mt Kenya. Thang’wa noted that if the residents from the region had not understood the message, things could have become chaotic.
Additionally, the Senator disclosed tensions between the DP and President William Ruto, blaming those involved for fueling the discord instead of resolving it.

He warned the group planning Gachagua’s impeachment, arguing it wouldn’t be easy. Thang’wa emphasized that Gachagua was elected by over five million Kenyans.
“They should abandon this idea because if the country was nearly destroyed over the finance bill, imagine the consequences if an elected leader was impeached,” he questioned.
Regarding the likelihood of the impeachment motion passing in Parliament, Thang’wa stated that MPs were now wiser and more attuned to the people’s voices.
He also expressed confidence that President Ruto would neither support nor allow the impeachment to occur, arguing that Ruto owed the Mt Kenya region and would not harm its voters.
“Those plotting this ouster are selfish. Kiunjuri might think he’ll secure the DP’s seat if it becomes vacant, but he won’t,” Thang’wa remarked.
In conclusion, Thang’wa urged Mt Kenya politicians to support Deputy President Gachagua, stating, “The only leader we have in the region with a massive following is the Deputy President, yet we are fighting him instead of supporting him.”
