Kiambu Catholic Church Breaks Tradition: Allows Man to Wed One Wife While Second Wife Watches
A Catholic Church in Kiambu County took an untraditional approach by permitting a couple to marry on Saturday, deviating from the Church’s standard policy that emphasizes marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
At the unconventional ceremony, Patrick Ndacu wed Margaret Nyokabi, his wife of more than 40 years.
However, Ndacu’s second wife was present, observing as the couple got married in the church.
The officiating priest shared with the media that the couple was granted permission to exchange vows after a thorough discussion and agreement about which of Ndacu’s wives would take part in the ceremony.
Negotiations lasted for five years before reaching a consensus and obtaining the church’s blessing for the marriage.

“The first wife was still part of his life, but he had another wife and children; however, he returned to the first wife,” the priest explained.
The second wife, who attended the wedding, mentioned that the family had agreed to include both wives in Ndacu’s will.
“We gathered for a meeting and discussed the situation, and property was allocated to me and the other wife,” Dinah told reporters.
Meanwhile, Ndacu emphasized that he recognized both women as his wives and wanted transparency so that after his death, all his families would be aware of each other.
“The church doesn’t permit exchanging wedding rings with two wives, but outside the church, I will acknowledge them as my wives and express my love for them,” he remarked.
“When a man falls ill, other women often come forward with children. I wanted to be open about my relationships.”
