Khalwale’s Incentive for Raila: Responding to Azimio’s Ultimatum

On Monday, May 8, Kenya Kwanza’s bipartisan team attempted to make amends with their Azimio counterparts after being accused of harboring selfish interests.

Kakamega Senator, a member of the team, disclosed that they were willing to listen to Azimio’s demands, even if it meant giving up some ground for the negotiations to succeed.

“I implore you, I will use my position responsibly, and we have already resumed bipartisan talks in the legislature.

Khalwale stated, “We are willing to agree on anything that will ensure Kenya’s advancement.”

The lawmaker further reassured Raila that their agreement to engage in dialogue on the raised issues was sincere.

“We will continue communicating. Senator calls for civility between the two teams, stating, “We respect the Prime Minister and his team, and even if they slight us, we will not respond in kind.”

However, Khalwale was irritated by the opposition’s claims that the Kenya Kwanza Bipartisan team lacked the qualifications to handle parliamentary negotiations.

“Raila asserted that no one on Ruto’s side was qualified to participate in the negotiations. I graduated from the University of Nairobi with a medical degree. Raila, you are an engineer, but which university did you attend?

“I’ve worked as a physician in Kakamega, Machakos, Kisii, Nairobi, and Mombasa. Where have you, as an engineer (Raila), practiced your profession?” Senator inserted holes.

Raila Odinga, the leader of Azimio, gave Kenya Kwanza a 48-hour ultimatum to make a concerted effort or he would terminate the negotiations.

He also accused the government of deceiving them into a temporary cease-fire so that Ruto could receive prominent diplomats.

Ruto hosted heads of state and diplomats during the first week of May 2023, including the prime minister of Japan and the chancellor of Germany.

He also welcomed diplomats from the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the World Trade Organization, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

Raila stated, “We know that the real reason Kenya Kwanza agreed to the resumption of talks was that they were expecting visitors and did not want demonstrations at the time.”

After he called a halt to protests, Kenya Kwanza, according to the former prime minister, continued to make excuses for not holding a meeting.

“Our discussions must begin on Wednesday, May 10.” Raila issued a 48-hour ultimatum, stating, “If they are not ready, we will consider the agreement null and void and explore other options.”

Azimio contested the inclusion of Adan Keynan, a member of parliament for Eldas, on the Kenya Kwanza team, arguing that he was part of their coalition, on Tuesday, April 25.

Wednesday, May 3, Kenya Kwanza replaced Keynan with Dido Rasso, a member of the Saku Parliament, to appease the opposition.
