Kenyan Who Travelled on Student Visa Arrested in India for Trafficking African Girls

An individual from Kenya was detained in India on suspicion of involvement in a group that traffics African girls to India and various other overseas nations.

As per the reports, it’s claimed that the man enticed the girls by offering promising employment opportunities in India’s hospitality sector, but ultimately trafficked them into unlawful operations.

The police disclosed that the Kenyan individual had journeyed to India using a student visa. However, they did not provide information regarding the visa’s validity or whether the person was staying illegally in the country after its expiration.

To strengthen their argument, law enforcement additionally claimed that he participated in a money laundering plot with two individuals from Nigeria and one from Israel. This deceitful scheme was also connected to human trafficking.

The individual, purportedly in charge of multiple accounts, allegedly received funds via mobile money or bank accounts to provide alibis for those engaged in illegal activities. Subsequently, these funds were moved to Kenya and various other nations.

Law enforcement had suspicions that the money was moved using unauthorized hawala agents, an unofficial method of transferring funds that has been deemed unlawful in India.

Under the regulations outlined in India’s Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) and Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), individuals involved in hawala transactions can be subjected to a penalty amounting to three times the sum of money implicated if found guilty.

In the meantime, the individual accused will stay under police custody until their appearance in front of a specialized PMLA court.

In September, there were arrests made in India of Kenyan women purportedly involved in operating a sex syndicate, drawing attention to a rise in instances of human trafficking.

The police disclosed that the women enticed job seekers with attractive opportunities in India, but altered the terms of their agreement once they arrived. The individuals in question reportedly seized the passports and visas of their victims and sold them to interested purchasers.

Amid an intensified crackdown on illegal sexual activities, law enforcement carried out a raid resulting in the rescue of five women.

As of 2022, 556 trafficking victims had been identified by the Indian government.
