The Presidential Transitional Council (PTC) of Haiti has confirmed the identity of the Kenyan police officer who was allegedly killed by armed gangs. The officer, Benedict Kabiru, lost his life during an anti-gang operation in Savien on Monday, March 24, 2025.
Haiti Confirms Death of Kenyan Officer
In an official statement on Wednesday evening, the Haitian government announced that Kabiru was part of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti. The operation was conducted alongside Haitian forces to combat gang violence in the region.
Haitiโs President, Fritz Alphonse Jean, expressed his condolences, describing Kabiru as a courageous officer who sacrificed his life for a better future in Haiti.
“The Presidential Transitional Council (PTC) extends its deepest condolences to the government and people of Kenya, as well as to the family of Benedict Kabiru, who fell on Monday, 24 March 2025, in Savien while carrying out his mission,” the statement read.
“This valiant police officer, engaged alongside Haitian forces in the fight against insecurity, made the ultimate sacrifice for a better future for our country. His bravery and commitment will never be forgotten.”
President Vows Justice for Kabiru
Speaking to the press, President Jean vowed to track down the criminals responsible for Kabiruโs death and ensure they face justice.
The first reports of Kabiruโs death surfaced on Tuesday, March 25, after local media in Haiti reported that he was killed during a confrontation with armed gangs. The same incident saw three armored vehicles belonging to the MSS peacekeepers set on fire. Footage shared online showed the vehicles engulfed in flames.
How the Tragic Incident Happened
Kenyan Police Spokesperson in Haiti, Jack Ombaka, confirmed that the attack happened after their vehicles got stuck in a ditch. It is suspected that the ditch was deliberately dug by gangs to trap security forces.
To assist in the situation, two Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles were dispatched from Pont-Sonde in central Haiti. However, the gangs launched an ambush on the officers as they tried to recover the trapped vehicles. During the attack, Kabiru was fatally shot, and his body was taken away by the gangs.
Search for Kabiruโs Body Underway
The Kenyan National Police Service (NPS) has deployed specialized teams to recover Kabiruโs body, which is still believed to be in the custody of the gangs. Authorities are working closely with Haitian security forces to bring those responsible to justice.
