Kenyan Govt Announces 6-Day Roadshows in 3 Chinese Cities

The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) intends to host a 6-day roadshow in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, China.

A fortnight has passed since President William Ruto returned from China, where he sought funding to finance his manifesto.

According to China Daily, the country’s largest English-language newspaper, the roadshows are scheduled to begin on November 8 and end on November 13.

John Chirchir, chief executive officer of the Kenya Tourism Board, told the outlet that Kenya was seeking to tap into China’s lucrative tourism market, particularly after noting an increase in leisure travelers in recent months.

For instance, the CEO disclosed that between January and August, the number of visitors increased by 154%, making the Asian nation one of the leading tourist origins for Kenyans.

“Apart from the roadshow, we have several other activities that are lined up. We have the joint airlines partnership campaigns which are coming up after the shows. This means we collaborate with key airlines to run campaigns,” he explained.

The roadshows are a result of the head of state’s trip to China in the middle of this month, where he secured more than a half-billion agreements.

Ruto stated at the time that the government had secured commitments from a variety of Chinese companies, including those to finance initiatives that were already underway.

In total, the companies have agreed to invest Ksh688.7 billion in Kenya.

”I am delighted for the 11 companies which have launched the Konza Medical City, their $161.7 million special purpose investment vehicle, which arrives in Kenya on time to take advantage of the Universal Health Coverage, as well as Zhende Medical Co. which is entering a deal to invest $125 million in Tatu city,” the elated Head of State announced at the time.

In July, PoliticalPulseChat reported that Kenyan tour operators were joining Chinese social media sites in greater numbers to attract tourists.

The strategy was a part of the KTB’s strategic plan for 2021 to 2025, designed to ensure that the country’s tourism sector explored Chinese social media apps given that Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are unavailable in the country.

WeChat, Mafengwo, Weibo, and Douyin are among the most prominent platforms currently utilized by Kenyan businesses.

During the first quarter of 2023, Kenya received 8,000 Chinese tourists, compared to 6,000 during the same period the previous year. In 2022, Kenya received 55,488 Chinese tourists overall.
