Kenyan Athlete Hellen Obiri Wins New York Marathon

Kenyan athlete Hellen Obiri has been crowned the winner of the New York City Marathon.

Obiri triumphed over her competition in the pro women’s open division during the Sunday Marathon after clocking a time of 2:27:23.

“The women’s open-division winner today is Hellen Obiri of Kenya, in 2:27:23. The men’s open-division winner is Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia, in a course-record time of 2:04:58. Stay tuned for our podiums!” read a statement from the Marathon’s X (formerly Twitter) page.

The win marks Obiri’s second victory of the year after winning the Boston Marathon, which is considered the world’s oldest annual marathon, with a time of 2:21:38.

The race kicked off on Sunday at Staten Island and attracted 55,000 athletes who competed in all categories. 

The marathon covered 26.2 miles (42 kilometers( and cut through all five boroughs within the Big Apple.

The professional women’s division kicked off at exactly 8:40 a.m. (New York Times) with the race ending at Central Park.

Labour CS Florence Bore joined other Kenyans in congratulating Obiri for her stellar performance describing her as a champion.

“Congratulations Hellen Obiri for winning the 2023 NYC Marathon. A true champion. Kenya is proud,” Bore posted.

Kenyan Albert Korir, who participated in the men’s race, emerged second after clocking a time of 2:06:57 behind the winner Tamirat Tola, an Ethiopian.

The third position was taken by Ethiopian Shura Kitata who clocked 2:07:11.
