Kenyan Athlete Agnes Ngetich Makes History After Breaking World Record
Agnes Ng’etich, a Kenyan athlete, achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first woman to complete a 10-kilometer race in less than 29 minutes.
On Sunday, World Athletics revealed that Ng’etich achieved a remarkable feat by reducing the previous record by 28 seconds, completing the 10,000 Valencia Ibercaja 2024 race in a time of 28:46.
Her record now awaits the usual ratification procedures by the World Athletics.
“Kenya’s Agnes Ngetich smashes the 10 kilometers road race world record by an astonishing 28 seconds at the 10,000 Valencia Ibercaja 2024 and becomes the first woman in history to break 29 minutes,” announced the athletics body.
Not long after securing victory in the race, Sports CS Ababu Namwamba reached out to the athlete to extend his congratulations for her remarkable achievement.

“Stepped out of church this blessed sunny Sunday to the beautiful news of Agnes Ng’etich smashing the World Record in the 10km Road Race in Valencia Spain,” Namwamba stated.
“I have spoken with Agnes on the phone to congratulate her on this superb feat. The Whole of Kenya is proud of you Agie.”
Ng’etich has set a new record following her previous achievement in the women-only global 10km record held in Transylvania, Romania.
At the race held in September last year, the athlete ran for 29:24.
World Athletics stated that Ngetich, 22, ‘demonstrated her determination right from the beginning and completed the initial 5km in 14:25 – surpassing the women-only world record for that distance by four seconds.’
“The world record is a surprise to me. I didn’t expect to get the world record. I just wanted a PB, low 30 minutes to break the course record, but a world record is really a surprise,” she stated at the time.
The athlete has the opportunity to earn Ksh5 million following President William Ruto’s directive as a result of the victory.
