Kenyan Among 5 Killed in DRC Rebels Attack

A Kenyan truck driver was among the five persons killed in an ambush conducted by a rebel group affiliated with the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) on Friday.

Barthelemy Kambale, a provincial civil servant of North Kivu who spoke with the press, stated that the rebel group initiated an ambush at a parking lot in Beni territory’s Kasindi.

Two lorry drivers, one Kenyan and one Congolese, two Ugandan soldiers, and a suspected ADF assailant were killed in the violent attack.

According to Kambale, the incident occurred at 10:30 p.m. when the rebel group arrived at the parking lot, blocked the road, and immediately opened fire on the gathering. In doing so, the insurgents also destroyed three vehicles.

“The ADF enemy arrived about 22:30 (2030 GMT), our forces blocked the road against the rebels, and two Ugandan soldiers died during the operation,” Kambale stated.

One ADF rebel was slain during a counterattack involving Ugandan soldiers and the rebel group.

“People are angry. They burned the body of a dead ADF,” Kambale stated.

This is the second time that the dissident group has launched an attack that resulted in multiple fatalities.

Since 2021, DRC authorities and East Africa Regional Forces have collaborated to expel DRC militants from their strongholds, but the attacks continue.

The EAC Regional Forces, comprised of Burundi, Kenya, South Sudan, and Uganda, were sent to the war-torn nation to restore peace and tranquility.

In a separate incident on Wednesday, a Kenyan soldier was slain when rapid mortar fire struck a military camp of the Regional Force of the States of East Africa in the Kibumba region.

Despite this, the Congolese government has urged the East Africa regional force to withdraw their troops, arguing that they have not provided an enduring solution to the conflict.

President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has issued an ultimatum for the withdrawal of the forces by December 2023, after extending the mission’s mandate twice since its inception in 2022.
