Shock and Outrage in Kenya as Viral Video Shows Women Beating Taxi Driver and Refusing to Pay- Government Vows Tough Action
Kenyaโs government has reacted sharply after a disturbing video swept across social media showing a group of women allegedly attacking a taxi driver and refusing to pay for their ride. The viral footage has caused widespread public anger, not only in Kenya but across Africa, where many people rely on ride-hailing and taxi services and understand the daily risks drivers face.
In a statement released on December 23, Kenyaโs Principal Secretary for the State Department of Gender Affairs, Anne Wangโombe, strongly condemned the behaviour captured in the clip. She expressed deep concern, emphasising that such behaviour goes against the values expected in any modern and respectful society.
โWe are profoundly disturbed by the viral video depicting several women assaulting a taxi driver and allegedly refusing to pay for services rendered. Such conduct is utterly unacceptable and violates the standards of a civil society,โ the PS wrote.
She stressed that violence in any form cannot be tolerated and must be addressed firmly and fairly.

โThe State Department for Gender condemns this act of violence unequivocally,โ PS Anne Wangโombe stated.
According to reports, the women are said to have booked the taxi ride online. However, once they reached their destination, they allegedly refused to settle the fare and instead turned violent. The driver, seen trying to defend himself in the video, was reportedly overwhelmed as multiple women attacked him.
Kenyaโs Gender Ministry has now promised swift intervention, pledging that justice will be pursued.
“Those responsible must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” The PS announced.
The incident has ignited conversations across Africa about respect for service providers, gender accountability, and the importance of upholding the rule of law. Authorities have encouraged the driver to contact the Ministry of Gender, Culture and Children Services for assistance. Meanwhile, members of the public with any information are urged to reach out through the State Departmentโs toll-free helpline 1195 or via direct message, as investigations continue.
