Kenya Reels from Catastrophic Floods: Over Ksh.80 Billion in Infrastructure Damage Reported
Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura revealed on Monday that the recent floods have resulted in infrastructure damage exceeding Ksh.80 billion, primarily affecting roads.
Mwaura, addressing the media, emphasized that the reported figure solely pertains to road damage and anticipates a higher total when accounting for other affected sectors.
He stressed the substantial impact of the floods, exacerbating an already dire situation compounded by the effects of El Niño rains.
“The damage attributed to these rains amounts to approximately Ksh.80 billion, predominantly affecting roads,” Mwaura stated.
Meanwhile, Mwaura disclosed that 44 primary and 27 secondary schools faced delays in reopening on Monday due to flood-induced damage.

He noted that a significant portion of these educational institutions lies in Nyeri county, where 12 primary and 16 secondary schools remain closed due to inundated classrooms and facilities.
In Kisumu, five schools became inaccessible after being submerged by the overflow from Lake Victoria, while in Pokot, two schools were cut off from access after a vital bridge was washed away.
In other areas, Tana River and Marsabit counties have reported fifty-three cases of cholera as sections of Kenya struggle with the aftermath of severe floods.
Mwaura added that the floods have uprooted over 113,000 households nationwide, with Nairobi bearing the brunt of this displacement, accounting for 58,009 households.
Meanwhile, the death toll from the floods has climbed to 277, with an additional fatality recorded in the past day.
