Kenya Power Updates Nationwide Outage

Kenya Power has begun restoring power in some areas of the country following a nationwide blackout that began at 9 p.m. on Friday, August 24.

The utility company verified on Saturday morning that it had restored power to the Mt Kenya region hours after the system failure.

On Saturday morning, power was also restored in areas of the Nairobi metropolitan area deemed indispensable to the country’s operations.

Kenya Electricity added that its teams moved swiftly to restore electricity to vital infrastructure such as hospitals and airports.

Kenyans were urged to be patient as technicians worked around the clock to restore normalcy to their services.

According to Kenya Power, the nationwide blackout was caused by a production facility malfunction.

However, it has yet to be determined which station witnessed the fault and what caused it.

“Our teams are working to restore power to all areas affected by the failure across the country. We apologize to our consumers for the inconvenience and appreciate their understanding,” the statement read in part.

“We are collaborating with teams from all involved sector partners to expedite the restoration of power in the shortest possible time.”

The nationwide blackout primarily affected Western Kenya, Rift Valley, and Mt. Kenya, as well as the city of Nairobi.

It halted economic activity in sections of the country, as many Kenyans relied on the national utility company for their home and business electricity needs.

Some institutions also encountered generator system failure, resulting in additional delays in the delivery of services. The Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) was impacted.

However, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) verified that the facility’s operations had resumed.
