Kenya Power Restores Electricity to Key Regions After the Second Nationwide Blackout in a Week

Kenya Power has successfully restored electricity to various regions across the country after a prolonged outage on Friday, which affected parts of Central Rift, Nairobi, North Rift, and Western Kenya.

The power company reported that key areas including Nyeri, Embu, Kirinyaga, Nanyuki, Nakuru, Naivasha, Thika, Eldoret, Kericho, Kakamega, Siaya, Busia, Vihiga, Kisumu, Bungoma, and Webuye now have their power supply back.

In a statement, Kenya Power apologized to its customers for the disruption caused by the outage. “We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we continue to work on restoring power to the remaining areas. We are committed to returning the situation to normal as swiftly as possible,” the companyโ€™s communication read.

It also assured the public that updates would be provided as the restoration efforts continued in the areas still affected by the blackout.

Despite the efforts to restore power, many Kenyans took to social media to express their frustration over the frequent power outages.

Many users questioned why the nation had experienced two major blackouts in such a short period and sought accountability from the authorities.

Comments ranged from complaints about the economic impact of the outages to calls for greater transparency from Kenya Power.

One user voiced concerns, asking, “What caused the blackout this time? And what are you doing to ensure it wonโ€™t happen again? People have lost money today because of the disruption, what do you plan to do about that?”

The recurrence of blackouts follows a directive from Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, who demanded that Kenya Power provide a comprehensive report on the state of the power system, including technical, operational, and human resource capacities.

Addressing the issue on September 5, 2024, Wandayi stated, “I wonโ€™t promise an end to blackouts, but we are putting measures and systems in place to mitigate them. Should they occur, we will ensure there is a swift response to restore power as quickly as possible.”
