Kenya Opens Applications for the 2026 U.S Diversity Visa Lottery: How to Apply

The United States has officially opened the application window for Kenyans to enter the 2026 Diversity Visa (DV) lottery, a global program offering 55,000 visas to foreign nationals.

Kenyans have the opportunity to apply from October 2 to November 5, 2024, giving them a limited timeframe to secure permanent residency in the U.S. Nearly 4,000 Kenyans are expected to be among the successful applicants.

The U.S. targets individuals from countries with historically low immigration rates, making Kenya eligible for the program. However, nations like India, Bangladesh, and Brazil are excluded due to their higher immigration numbers in recent years.

Applicants for the DV lottery must meet specific criteria, including education or work experience, and those selected will undergo interviews to assess their eligibility for permanent residency.

The U.S. Department of State highlights the importance of accuracy throughout the application process, with even minor errors leading to disqualification.

A key rule is that only one entry is allowed per person. Submitting multiple applications results in automatic disqualification, making adherence to the rules crucial for applicants.

Kenyans should carefully safeguard their confirmation numbers, as these are required to check application status. Results for the 2026 DV lottery will be announced in 2025, and the confirmation number will remain valid until September 30, 2026.

Although applying for the DV lottery is free, successful candidates will face additional costs, including a $330 visa application fee. Additional expenses may include medical exams and required documentation.

All DV lottery applications must be submitted electronically via the official website, https://dvprogram.state.gov.

Starting May 3, 2025, applicants can check their entry status using their confirmation numbers on the Entrant Status Check website at https://dvprogram.state.gov.

Successful entrants will receive guidance on applying for visas for themselves and eligible family members. Visa interview appointments will also be confirmed via Entrant Status.

The U.S. has divided the available visas across six geographic regions, ensuring fair distribution. This could improve the chances for Kenyans, as the program seeks to balance immigration numbers globally.

Despite the competitive nature of the program, it offers a rare chance for those aspiring to move to the U.S., serving as a potential pathway to a green card for many Kenyans.

Although the process may seem intimidating, the opportunity for permanent U.S. residency is real and could dramatically change the lives of the chosen few.

For Kenyans looking to seize this opportunity, the deadline is fast approaching in November, making it crucial to submit applications for a chance at the 2026 Diversity Visa lottery.
