Kenya Kwanza and Azimio Dialogue: Demands for Legal Recognition

The National Dialogue group has requested that the leaders of the House expedite the creation of a motion to formally acknowledge the committee in the legal framework. This is to guarantee that the committee’s discussions are legally binding.

In its inaugural meeting, wherein the committee officially welcomed the 8-member technical team, the participants decided to task the technical committee with the responsibility of examining the concerns presented by both sides. The aim is to compile these concerns, prioritize important matters on the agenda, and assist the committee in resolving the duration of the discussions.

Even though there was considerable excitement about the upcoming discussions between Kenya Kwanza and Azimio, the preliminary meeting of the technical committee before the talks were unsuccessful in achieving a mutual agreement regarding the topics that the committee would address.

Therefore, the committee decided to incorporate the technical committee before the talks recommence on the upcoming Monday, during which the agenda will have been specified.

However, before commencing formal discussions, the committee prompted its parliamentary representatives to expedite the creation of a proposal. This proposal aims to officially acknowledge the committee, ensuring that it’s discussions and overarching suggestions are in compliance with legal regulations and can consequently be acted upon.

Anticipating potential bills and the need for law revision due to certain problems, the technical committee plans to collaborate with the parliamentary secretariat to commence the process of drafting.

During the week, the technical committee will convene to discuss initial matters, including the length of the discussions. It’s important to highlight that the Azimio coalition has warned of restarting street demonstrations if a solution isn’t achieved by the month’s end.

“This is the team that will be backing us in the dialogue team. We will be briefing them on what our expectations are as a team so that we realize the objectives as soon as we can,” said Kenya Kwanza’s team leader Kimani Ichung’wah – team leader.

Inquiries were also made regarding the surprising appearance of US Senator Chris Coons in the nation. It was pointed out that he played a key role in facilitating a meeting between former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga. This encounter led to the handshake, which has faced strong opposition from the Kenya Kwanza movement.

However, as the committee began its sessions, it became clear that certain topics brought up by both sides were likely to cause strong disagreements within the committee and could potentially lead to a deadlock.

The committee’s focus is currently on figuring out the approach for integrating Azimio’s efforts to involve diplomatic corps and religious leaders in the discussions. This matter has been temporarily postponed until a plan for their participation is developed.

A civil organization was present at the Bomas of Kenya, aiming to participate in the discussions by asserting that the committee did not engage in public involvement before the talks. Nevertheless, they were ultimately disregarded.
