KeNHA Closes Mtwapa-Kilifi Road After Bridge Collapses

A crucial highway connecting Mtwapa and Kilifi has been closed by the Kenya National Highway Authority due to the collapse of the main bridge that previously connected the two areas.

The inundation had obstructed the Mbogolo bridge, which connects the two municipalities, thereby rendering the road impassable, the report continued.

“KeNHA informs the public that Mbogolo Bridge on Mtwapa – Kilifi (A7) Road has been cut off. This disrupts traffic to and from Mombasa,” KeNHA cautioned.

It was recommended that motorists utilize alternate routes when commuting from Mombasa to Kilifi County. A route that is accessible is the Mombasa-Mazeras-Kaloleni-Mavueni-Kilifi Road.

However, the authority guaranteed that a new bridge would be built along the route as part of the Kwa Kadzengo-Kilifi Road Project to restore normalcy.

Staff were also dispatched to the location to oversee traffic on the affected road segment.

“Motorists are asked to exercise restraint as efforts are made to restore traffic flow,” the authority responded.

KeNHA closed the Cheredende-Bura-Hola-Malindi Road on November 23, due to the severe flooding caused by El Nino.

The road extends for 42 kilometers from the Madogo junction and an additional 6 kilometers from Cherendere town swept away by flooding. It was prohibited for motorists to utilize the road until the drainage system was cleansed to permit water to flow.

In light of the El Nino precipitation, President William Ruto arranged a Cabinet meeting for Monday to deliberate on the recommendations he put forth to mitigate the flood-related damages, which he reflected upon on Saturday.

Allocating Ksh2.4 billion for food supplies, repairing damaged roadways, and delivering fuel and medications were among them. A National Disaster Operation Center was also established by Ruto to ensure that adequate interventions are in place and to coordinate all pertinent information.

“The security situation is also being affected by the inaccessibility of some areas. NPS will work with different stakeholders to ensure we secure the country. Treasury has been mandated to explore different mechanisms of funding for required resources, and recommendations should be presented on Monday,” the head of state-directed.

Moreover, he directed the KDF to furnish air services, while NYS and all road contractors were tasked with executing emergency interventions.

“I want to assure the Country that we are appropriately seized of the matter and better prepared for the future,” Ruto guaranteed.

President William Ruto, accompanied by military heads, CSs and governors, addresses the nation at State House, Nairobi, on Saturday, November 25.
