“Keep Looking Back”: Gachagua Fires Back at Uhuru’s Critique of Ruto

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticized former President Uhuru Kenyatta for his comments directed at Commander-in-Chief William Ruto.

During the funeral ceremony of the late Mrs. Amos Kimunya, the ex-head of State urged Ruto to concentrate on serving the Kenyan people and reduce the inclination to attribute problems to previous administrations.

Speaking at the yearly Cabinet retreat in Naivasha on Monday, February 19, Gachagua urged his superior to remain vigilant and focused on past developments.

He contended that periodically reflecting on the past ensures that the government fulfills its commitment to the people of Kenya by its manifesto.

“I heard somebody saying that you should not look at the rearview mirror. I want to encourage you to continue looking in the rearview mirror. In your leadership, and your excellency, you have made it very clear that no Kenyan should be left behind. You must continuously continue looking in the rearview mirror to ensure that all Kenyans are onboard and not left behind,” he stated.

“Again, there are people who would like to derail your vehicle. Some would like to puncture the rear wheels. while some would like to remove goods from your car. You must look at the rearview so that you are ahead of everybody who may want to derail your progress.”

He additionally mentioned that regularly reviewing the progress would enable him to identify if his team is not performing well, allowing him to implement measures to ensure everyone contributes effectively.

Illustrating with the analogy of a car, Uhuru previously advised Ruto to engage in planning. He argued that proficient drivers don’t continually focus on their rearview mirrors.

He additionally pointed out that leaders who consistently attribute problems to previous administrations are more likely to misguide the nation.

“When I was in leadership, I used to tell leaders that focused leaders are the ones who look ahead and not those who always want to revisit the past,” he told the congregation on Saturday.

“If you want to lead this country, focus ahead. But if you keep with gossip… You are going nowhere. Leadership is like driving a vehicle. You can’t drive while looking at the rear mirror, or you risk crashing the vehicle.”

Upon assuming control, the present administration’s supporters promptly accused Kenyatta’s government of depleting the treasury.

They argued that Ruto had to take decisive decisions including introducing a slew of taxes to repair the battered economy.
