KEBS Staff Reshuffled Following Ruto’s Suspensions in Sugar Scandal

Following the suspension of Bernard Njiraini. The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) on Thursday, May 18 announced the appointment of Esther Ngari as acting Managing Director.

According to the statement, Ngari would hold the position until a permanent replacement is appointed.
Ngari was previously the Director of Standards and Trade at KEBS.

Bemard Nguyo will assume the position of Interim Director of Quality Assurance and Inspection, the Bureau announced.

In contrast, Zachariah Lukorito was appointed as the Acting Director of Standards Development and Trade, while Peter Makan was appointed as the Acting Chief Manager of Quality Assurance (Nairobi).

Mutuma Muthuri will serve as the Acting Manager of Inspection (Mombasa Port Office), and Henry Sambul will serve as the Acting Assistant Manager (Kilindini).

“We wish them well as they carry out their responsibilities. “KEBS remains committed to its mission of promoting standardization in Kenya’s commerce and industry,” the statement reads in part.

After President William Ruto suspended Njiraini and other senior staff for releasing condemned sugar in 2018, KEBS implemented the aforementioned modifications.

In addition to the quality assurance agency, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the National Police Service (NPS) also sent their senior officers home.

Felix Koskei, the head of the public service, issued a statement announcing the suspension of the officers.

“It has since been determined that the shipment was irregularly diverted and released outside of the procedure. In addition, the conditions regarding the distiller’s open and competitive enrollment were violated, and the applicable taxes were not paid.

“In recognition of the unique mission of the agencies as guardians of public health and safety, it is evident that some officers in the relevant agencies abdicated their responsibilities at the risk of causing harm to the public,” the statement stated in part.
