KDF, GSU Officers Accused of Crippling an Innocent Man Over Chicken
A family in Ainamoi, Kericho County, is demanding justice after their relative was assaulted by Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and General Service Unit (GSU) officers over a chicken theft accusation.
The family claims that Kiplagat, their son, was arrested in March 2024 for allegedly stealing a chicken. However, after an investigation, he was cleared and released.
Despite this, they allege that a KDF officer and a GSU officer, who were familiar with the family, targeted Kiplagat and beat him for a crime he had been found innocent of.
One family member explained, “On the night of December 22, government officers found him and severely beat him. The next day, December 23, I found him sleeping, and he told me that GSU and KDF officers had attacked him.”

The family is now appealing to the government for justice, as Kiplagat has been left crippled and is suffering from severe injuries due to the attack. His sister said, “My brother is now disabled. We have to take care of him, and we need the governmentโs help to seek justice.”
Kiplagat’s case adds to the growing list of Kenyans injured by police brutality. Recently, the police have faced criticism for using excessive force, with some victims dying as a result.
This incident comes after President William Ruto urged police officers to refrain from using excessive force in their duties. Speaking during the launch of the National Police Service and Prisons Service strategic plans on December 13, Ruto called for a shift toward policing that respects the rule of law and promotes positive relations with the public.
He emphasized, “Kenyans should experience a change in policing, moving away from extrajudicial actions, impunity, and violence, towards lawful practices that build trust with the community.”
Ruto also encouraged Kenyans to show restraint when interacting with law enforcement officers.
