Kawira Ousted: High Court Upholds Her Impeachment
Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has lost her legal battle to remain in office after a court upheld her impeachment.
On Friday, March 14, Justice Bahati Mwamuye ruled in favor of the Senate’s decision, which confirmed her removal by the Meru County Assembly. Mwangaza was impeached over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and violating the Constitution.
Court Upholds Senate’s Decision
Justice Mwamuye stated that the Senate followed the Constitution during the impeachment process. He dismissed Mwangaza’s claims that the procedure was chaotic, saying she failed to provide evidence.
“The petitioner has not shown that the Senate’s analysis of the law and evidence was so incorrect that no reasonable body would have reached that decision,” Mwamuye ruled.
What This Means for Mwangaza
With this judgment, Mwangaza’s efforts to keep her seat have suffered a major blow. However, she still has the option to appeal in higher courts to save her political career.
Before the ruling, Mwangaza had expressed confidence that the courts would rule in her favor. She claimed that her impeachment was politically motivated by leaders afraid to compete against her in future elections. Despite this setback, she had previously stated she would run again in 2027, but her chances now remain uncertain.
Who Will Lead Meru County?
Following Mwangaza’s removal, Deputy Governor Rev. Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia is expected to take over as Meru Governor. According to the Kenyan Constitution, this transition ensures stability in county leadership.
Background on the Case
Justice Mwamuye had issued temporary orders in December 2024, allowing Mwangaza to stay in office for 120 days. However, with the latest ruling, her tenure has officially ended.
