Karua Clarifies: 10M Signatures Not for Ruto Impeachment
Monday, July 10th, Azimio Principal Martha Karua clarified the motivation behind the opposition’s campaign to collect 10 million signatures.
Karua explained in an interview with Spice FM that the collection of signatures represented the number of Kenyans who supported Azimio’s protests against the government.
In contrast to an earlier statement made by Eugene Wamalwa regarding the use of signatures to depose the government of President William Ruto, the leader of the Narc Kenya party shifted his position.
She emphasized that the signature collection allowed Kenyans to voice their grievances and dissatisfaction.
“Because there is no location large enough to hold a meeting of the Kenyan public, we will convene as many meetings as possible throughout the country.
“The people will conduct their own signature referendum. By the time we reach 10 million signatures, we will know that the majority of Kenyans are speaking,” she said, stressing that for a long time, Azimio was viewed as lacking the support of the people.
Karua noted that Kenyans could directly exercise their will and sovereignty by appending their signatures.

Karua described four central issues that Azimio was addressing in its struggle against the government, including the implementation of the Finance Act, of 2023 and the pursuit of electoral justice.
The coalition also fought for respect for multiparty democracy and impartiality in the selection of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission selection panel.
“It will be a head count of those who support the cause,” she explained, emphasizing the primary objective of the signature campaign.
Karua reiterated that the weekly demonstrations would continue until further notice, citing Ruto’s government’s disregard for the issues afflicting Kenyans.
The former Gichugu MP defended the coalition’s advisory position when questioned about the use of cars by Azimio principals during protests, despite the coalition’s call for Kenyans to carpool and explore alternative means of transportation to deny Ruto’s government the revenue generated from fuel Value-added Tax (VAT).
She emphasized that she and other Azimio leaders, including Eugene Wamalwa, had practiced carpooling on numerous occasions.
The sentiments of Karua came a day after Fredrick Okango, the spokesperson for Azimio, made similar remarks regarding the ultimate objective of the signature collection.
He stated, “We are not seeking impeachment, but rather the delegitimization and withdrawal of the delegated sovereign powers.”
Azimio implied that the initiative was a means of removing Ruto from power while declaring the launch of the signature collection campaign.
“We, the people of Kenya, will initiate a signature-gathering campaign to demonstrate our willingness to reject Ruto’s government. Eugene Wamalwa stated on Tuesday, June 27 that this exercise will take many different forms before Ruto is removed from power.
