Kanini Kega Triumphs Over Jeremiah Kioni in Jubilee Party Battle
Monday, July 10, the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal (PPDT) upheld Kanini Kega’s appointment as Secretary General of the Jubilee Party, as approved by the National Executive Committee (NEC) on April 16, 2023.
The tribunal ruled that the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting that removed Jeremiah Kioni as secretary general and appointed Kega in his place was convened and constituted properly.
In addition to dismissing Kioni’s appeal, the tribunal ruled that the Registrar of Political Parties had acted appropriately in refusing to recognize the embattled secretary-general.
The court also ruled that the appellants, including Kioni, David Murathe, Kagwe Gichohi, and Jubilee Party, must pay all the respondents’ court costs.
Kega praised the tribunal’s decision, observing that it was time for the party of former president Uhuru Kenyatta to end the five-month legal battle.
“Jubilee was once the largest party in the country, but due to the mismanagement of certain individuals, it has lost a great deal of its strength,” Kega said.
Kega asserted that the ruling was a significant victory for the members and leadership of the Jubilee Party, who were facing legal challenges from Kioni and his supporters.
He also indicated that the case will establish a precedent for future cases involving the removal of party officials and the membership’s authority over individuals.

Simultaneously, the Tribunal upheld Kioni and Murathe’s expulsion from the Jubilee Party. The tribunal ruled that the Jubilee Party Disciplinary Committee followed proper procedure in expelling Kioni and Murathe for serious infractions.
The internal dispute resolution committee of the Jubilee Party currently decides the fate of Kioni and the other expelled officials. As planned, the committee will hear their appeal of the tribunal’s ruling and determine whether or not they will be reinstated.
“The Political Parties Dispute Tribunal’s ruling is a significant development in our party’s ongoing political turmoil.”
Kega stated, “As a first step, we will hold town hall meetings across the country to listen to our members and determine the best course of action.”
The most recent ruling nullifies prior orders that favored Kioni after he petitioned the court to issue temporary restraining orders until the case is heard and decided.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is aligned with Kioni and Murathe, had his position further compromised by this decision. Sabina Chege was placed in lieu of Uhuru.
Since the 2022 general election, when Kenyatta’s preferred successor, Raila Odinga, lost to William Ruto, the Jubilee Party has been in turmoil. The party is now effectively divided into two factions, commanded by Kenyatta and Ruto, respectively.
