Kalonzo Musyoka Urges Mt Kenya Region to Lead Protests Against Finance Bill

Kalonzo Musyoka, speaking on Sunday, June 16, emphasized the urgency for the Mt Kenya region to take a leading role in opposing the proposed tax increases outlined in the Finance Bill.

Addressing attendees during a church service in Mwingi, Kitui County, Kalonzo underscored the potential adverse effects the bill could have on the region, which historically has not been active in opposition-led demonstrations.

In his remarks, Kalonzo acknowledged that his ancestral hometown had not typically been at the forefront of protests but emphasized the critical need for Mt Kenya to spearhead the current opposition against the Finance Bill.

He expressed his willingness to participate in demonstrations planned for the capital, Nairobi, highlighting the region’s vulnerability should the bill be enacted.

“The next time, if there will be demonstrations, this time they’ll start in Mt Kenya because they are the ones pressed most,” Kalonzo declared, alluding to the economic repercussions the region could face, especially from proposed motor vehicle taxes.

He warned that the high concentration of vehicles in Mt Kenya would disproportionately burden its residents economically.

Furthermore, Kalonzo leveled accusations against President William Ruto, asserting that the administration’s taxation policies disproportionately target the country’s middle class.

He criticized what he perceived as the misuse of public funds for personal gain, alleging that close associates of President Ruto had amassed significant wealth, including purchasing helicopters outright.

Kalonzo, who previously served as Kenya’s 10th vice president, reiterated his commitment to challenging President Ruto in the upcoming 2027 general election.

He emphasized the opposition’s role in liberating Kenya from what he described as the oppressive governance of the current administration.

In summary, Kalonzo Musyoka’s call for action resonated strongly with the residents of Mt Kenya, urging them to lead the charge against perceived injustices in the Finance Bill.

His statements underscored broader concerns about economic equity and governance in Kenya, setting the stage for potential political mobilization ahead of the next election cycle.
