Kalonzo Explains Why Azimio Parties Are No Longer Using the Coalition Name

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has explained why the remaining parties in the Azimio coalition no longer use its name. He noted that the parties, such as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), have been focused on strengthening themselves after Raila Odingaโ€™s partnership with President William Ruto.

Kalonzo added that, in the new year, Azimio will release a statement to reaffirm their role as the opposition. He explained, “Weโ€™ve avoided using Azimio because ODM has not been mentioning it. They are focused on strengthening their position, and with their government involvement, itโ€™s a bit confusing. But in the coming days, we will make it clear that we are the opposition and will hold Rutoโ€™s administration accountable.”

Kalonzo emphasized that those still in Azimio, including himself, remain committed to supporting the people of Kenya in pushing for better governance. “We will continue to stand with the people, and thatโ€™s why we consider ourselves the loyal opposition,” he said.

When asked about the future of the coalition, Kalonzo said itโ€™s up to the coalition leaders to decide. He mentioned that he hasnโ€™t heard any statements from Azimio chairman Uhuru Kenyatta or party leader Raila Odinga about leaving the coalition.

This comes after President William Ruto recently met with Uhuru Kenyatta at his Ichaweri home and appointed some of his allies to key government positions. Kalonzo has consistently said he will not work with Ruto.
