Kalonzo Drops Bombshell: IEBC’s Ksh61 Billion Budget a Shady Deal?
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has raised concerns about the budget proposed by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for the 2027 general elections.
While speaking at the launch of Martha Karuaโs People’s Liberation Party on Thursday, February 27, Kalonzo questioned how the IEBC arrived at the budget figures they presented. He argued that the commissionโs financial plans should be carefully examined as the country prepares for the next elections.
Addressing the younger generation, Kalonzo urged Gen Z to thoroughly vet every individual seeking to become an IEBC commissioner. He expressed skepticism about the budget proposal, which stands at Ksh61 billion.
“Gen Z, make sure you scrutinize anyone who applies to be a commissioner. The current officials have given an arbitrary budget of Ksh61 billion. Where did they come up with this amount?” Kalonzo asked.

He further questioned who authorized the announcement of these figures, implying that there might be underlying issues that need to be investigated. Kalonzo emphasized that the new IEBC must operate transparently and be held accountable.
On February 25, while appearing before the National Assemblyโs Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, the IEBC secretariat stated that they required Ksh61.7 billion to properly prepare for the elections.
During the session, IEBC Deputy CEO Obadiah Keitany explained that the funds would be allocated for purchasing election materials, replacing the Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS) kits, and hiring election staff.
He elaborated that in the last election, around 500,000 temporary election officials were hired, which alone cost approximately Ksh7 billion.
The IEBC is still not fully formed, as the recruitment of new commissioners and the chairperson is ongoing.
