Justin Muturi Reveals Son’s Ordeal During Abduction Amid Gen Z Protests

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has shared shocking details about his son Leslie Muturiโ€™s experience while in captivity. Leslie was abducted on June 22, 2024, during the height of the Gen Z protests and endured harsh conditions before his release.

    Blindfolded and Handcuffed

Speaking in a live TV interview on March 12, 2025, Muturi revealed that Leslie was blindfolded and handcuffed throughout his captivity. He was only set free after President William Ruto personally intervened.

Muturi explained that Ruto called the Director General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS), Noordin Haji, leading to Leslieโ€™s release.

โ€œThe people who took him kept him in a house. He told them, โ€˜You have my phone; check it, and you will not find anything linking me to the Gen Z protests.โ€™ He is not a Gen Z,โ€ Muturi stated.

    Connection to Mark Mwenje

Muturi expressed confusion over why his son was taken, as Leslie was with Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje at the time of his abduction in Lavington.

โ€œI believe his only mistake was being friends with Hon. Mwenje. But if thatโ€™s the case, why wasnโ€™t Mwenje taken too? To this day, no one has explained why my son was abducted,โ€ he said.

    Location of Detention

Leslie told his father that he was held in a house near a busy road, as he could hear vehicles passing over a rubber strip.

โ€œHe was blindfolded and kept incommunicado. He was given a mattress to sleep on while still restrained. The next morning, a woman brought him tea and a slice of bread,โ€ Muturi recalled.

    Release After Rutoโ€™s Intervention

After Rutoโ€™s call to Haji, Leslie was freed. He was dropped along Muthaiga Road and told not to look back at the vehicle. However, he managed to sneak a glance and saw that it was a double-cabin pickup.

โ€œHe was told to walk towards Gertrudeโ€™s Hospital. Unfortunately, he couldnโ€™t see the vehicleโ€™s registration number,โ€ Muturi explained.

Leslieโ€™s abduction raises serious questions about forced disappearances in Kenya, especially during politically charged moments. The government is yet to give a full explanation regarding the incident.
