Junet Mohamed Tells Off Kalonzo After Declaring Himself, Chief Opposition Leader
Suna East MP Junet Mohamed sharply criticized Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Thursday for self-proclaiming as the chief opposition leader.
During Treasury CS John Mbadi’s thanksgiving event, Junet condemned Kalonzo’s self-assigned title, noting that Kenya’s constitution lacks any provision for such a role.
Junet highlighted that the government has not yet established the official opposition office as recommended by the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report.
He further emphasized his commitment to collaborate with Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah in Parliament to ensure the formal creation of the opposition leader’s office.
Junet pointed out that some have falsely accused ODM party members of being part of the government while they claim to be the new opposition leaders.

He clarified that the constitution does not outline the role of an opposition leader and that as minority members, they will work alongside Kimani Ichung’wah to establish the official opposition leader’s position.
However, Junet declared himself the interim opposition leader, stepping into the role as Raila Odinga pursues the African Union Commission Chairperson position.
He asserted that his position as the minority leader in Parliament justifies his claim to Odinga’s role.
Junet advised against assuming roles that don’t officially exist, stressing that Parliament should first formalize the position before anyone assumes it.
Currently, Junet declared himself as Kenya’s opposition leader due to his status as a minority leader, asserting that the role cannot be taken from him and that those wanting to oppose should coordinate with him.
Junet’s remarks followed Kalonzo Musyoka’s recent declaration as the new opposition leader after Raila Odinga shifted his focus to the top African Union position.
Kalonzo expressed readiness to lead the official opposition, promising an unprecedented level of opposition activity, emphasizing that while their parliamentary numbers may be small, they have the support of the Kenyan people.
