Judiciary Faces Fire: Gachagua Points Finger Amid 17 Tragic Burials in kirinyaga’s Alcohol Crisis

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is attributing the surge in illicit brew cases, resulting in numerous fatalities, particularly in the Mt Kenya region, to the Judiciary.

During the funeral service for the 17 individuals who lost their lives after ingesting the lethal alcohol in Kangai and Kandongu villages, Mwea-West Sub-County, Kirinyaga County, Gachagua expressed on Saturday that the courts had not effectively carried out their responsibility in prosecuting cases associated with illegal alcoholic beverages.

He argues that at times, court rulings tend to show bias, creating challenges in achieving justice and eliminating illegal alcohol in the nation.

As per the DP, the courts have demonstrated their inability to effectively address the problem of illegal brewing. Therefore, the Chief Justice should permit county governments to take action and manage the situation.

“I want the judges to look at this photo. I should actually send this photo to the Chief Justice so that she can tell her people to allow governors to deal with this problem,” said the DP referring to the 17 coffins paraded at the funeral of the victims of the killer brew in Kirinyaga.

He added: “โ€ฆBecause they have been issuing ex-parte orders which are one-sided. All this illicit alcohol being sold in the country has been allowed by the courts. We are wondering are the courts really helping or are they making things worse?”

Last month, 17 individuals from Kenya met a tragic end when they ingested poisonous illicit alcohol in Kandongu village, located in Kirinyaga County.

Subsequent inquiries revealed that the alcoholic beverages ingested by the 17 individuals, along with several others who experienced vision loss, were actually confiscated liquors kept as evidence at the Kiamaciri police station.

The potentially deadly mixture is said to have been kept at the station and was allegedly sold to a community member by four rogue officers. Subsequently, these officers were arrested and brought to the Baricho Law Courts for arraignment.

Governor Anne Waiguru of Kirinyaga has directed the prompt shutdown of all bars within the county.
