Jubilee Party Rift Deepens: Uhuru Faction Seeks Legal Action
The Jubilee Party of former President Uhuru Kenyatta has filed a petition against the rebel group commanded by MPs Sabina Chege (Nominated) and Kanini Kega (East African Legislative Assembly) at the Milimani High Court.
Friday, the Jubilee faction of Uhuru’s Jubilee party accused its rival of continuing to pose as the party’s officials despite the ongoing leadership dispute.
“Yesterday, we filed a contempt case at the Milimani High Court against the rebel group. Despite multiple court orders, the rebels continue to carry themselves as Jubilee Party officials, conduct business on behalf of the Party, and create confusion amongst our members,” read a statement from the party.
Lady Justice Janet Mulwa ordered that the certified urgent motion be served to all involved parties. The scheduled date for the hearing is October 23, 2023.
Shortly after the General Election of 2022, both factions claimed to be Jubilee’s legitimate party leaders, igniting the party’s leadership conflicts.

Former president Uhuru Kenyatta’s party supported Raila Odinga of the Azimio party, who lost the election to Ruto.
East African Legislative Assembly member Kanini Kega announced himself as the new Secretary General following Ruto’s inauguration, suspending Kenyatta’s confidant Jeremiah Kioni and chairman David Murathe.
Kega rallied several party officials, including Sabina Chege, and shifted the alliance to Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
Uhuru moved swiftly to regain control of the party and restore party discipline by expelling the dissidents.
Kega and other dissidents defied the expulsion by continuing to identify as Jubilee Party members and designating Sabina Chege as interim party leader.
Chege recently announced that the party is no longer affiliated with the Kenya Kwanza or Azimio la Umoja coalitions.
She noted that they had presented the National Assembly with documents declaring their political stance.
