Jubilee Insider Drops Bombshell: Uhuru Kenyatta to Blame for Mount Kenya’s Political Downfall
Nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege has accused former President Uhuru Kenyatta of weakening the political influence of the Mount Kenya region.
In an interview with Spice FM on Thursday, March 27, Chege said Uhuru failed to mentor a successor for the region before leaving office in 2022. She compared this to former President Mwai Kibaki, who had key figures in his Cabinet guiding the transition of leadership.
“When President Kibaki’s time came, his close allies made it clear that Uhuru Kenyatta was the leader to engage with for matters concerning Central Kenya. However, in 2022, there was no such arrangement. Many leaders left the Jubilee Party, and Uhuru did not groom anyone to take over,” she said.
Mount Kenya Leadership Crisis
Chege stated that Uhuru’s exit created a leadership vacuum in the region and weakened the Jubilee Party, once considered Mount Kenya’s main political party.
“After 2022, we saw internal conflicts and leadership struggles. We reached out to Uhuru for guidance, but instead of uniting us, we ended up in court battles,” she explained.
She further highlighted confusion within Jubilee, questioning who the rightful Secretary-General was between Kanini Kega, Jeremiah Kioni, and herself.
Ruto’s Cabinet Reshuffles
Reflecting on President William Ruto’s recent Cabinet changes, Chege expressed relief that the Mount Kenya region still had strong representation in government.
The latest reshuffle on March 26 saw Justin Muturi removed as Public Service CS and replaced by Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku. Hanna Wendot was appointed CS for Gender and Culture. Additionally, former Environment CS Aden Duale was moved to the Health Ministry, while Deborah Barasa took over the Ministry of Environment.
A week earlier, on March 20, Ruto also reassigned six Principal Secretaries and nominated 14 new ones.
Conclusion
Sabina Chege’s remarks highlight ongoing political challenges in Mount Kenya following Uhuru Kenyatta’s exit. As Jubilee Party struggles with leadership disputes, the region’s political future remains uncertain.
