Jowie Irungu Seeks Permission to Attend Father’s Funeral Amid Appeal Against Death Sentence
Jowie Irungu, sentenced to death for the murder of Monica Kimani, is seeking permission to attend his father’s funeral.
His father, Julius Irungu, passed away on Saturday, June 15, while undergoing treatment.
Irungu’s widow, Annastacia Thaama, informed the press that her husband had been admitted to Nakuru Level 5 Hospital Annex for cancer treatment.
Jowie’s lawyer, Andrew Muge, stated that they are exploring options for his client to attend the funeral.
At 64, Julius Irungu had battled cancer for many years, including the period when his son was facing murder charges.
This explains why only Jowie’s mother was present on March 13, when Lady Justice Grace Nzioka sentenced him to death.
“Jowie’s dad endured cancer throughout the prosecution, attending court despite his pain. Allowing Jowie to pay his last respects is only just,” his lawyer commented.

In February 2024, the High Court ruled that convicted individuals have the right to attend close family members’ funerals.
“The right for prisoners to attend family funerals is based on humane treatment and inherent human dignity,” the High Court stated.
Justice Lawrence Mugambi noted that while this right exists, it is not absolute and can be denied if there are compelling reasons.
Jowie Irungu must demonstrate that allowing him to attend will not cause distress to the victims of his crime.
Regarding the burial, Muge mentioned, “I’ve been in discussions with Jowie’s mother and sister. The plan is to bury Julius in his ancestral home in Muranga. Details will follow.”
In March 2024, Jowie Irungu filed an appeal against his conviction and death sentence through his lawyer.
In the appeal notice, Jowie described the death sentence as cruel, arguing it violates Article 25 of the Constitution as a degrading punishment.
