Journalist Rasna Warah’s Final Message to President Ruto Before Her Death: “How much money and land do you need…”
Kenyans are grieving the loss of celebrated journalist Rasna Warah, who died on Saturday after battling cancer.
At 63 years old, Rasna was not only a respected writer but also an outspoken advocate for better political governance, earning her admiration from many across the nation. Her career included a tenure with Nation Media Group (NMG), where she contributed a regular opinion column to the Daily Nation.
Rasna’s work extended beyond local borders, as she wrote for a range of regional and international platforms, including The East African, The Elephant, Kwani?, The Mail and Guardian, the UK’s Guardian, and Africa is a Country. Her professional journey also led her to work with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), highlighting her dedication to global issues.

Her academic background was equally impressive. Rasna was a graduate of Malmö University in Sweden, where she earned a Master’s degree in Communication for Development. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Women’s Studies from Suffolk University in Boston, USA.
In her final days, Rasna remained active on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), where she expressed her concerns about governance in Kenya. She directed a powerful message to President William Ruto, saying, “I was diagnosed with cancer soon after you were declared president. I have always wondered whether there is a link. Before I die, I want to know: how much money and land do you need, and how much suffering do you want to inflict on Kenyans before you die?”
Her words, reflective of her unwavering advocacy for justice, have left many reflecting on her impactful legacy.
