Jimi Wanjigi Sues DPP and IG for ‘Politically Motivated’ Raid on Muthaiga Residence

Businessman Jimi Wanjigi has filed a lawsuit against the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli, alleging that a recent raid on his Muthaiga home was politically motivated.

In the legal action, Wanjigi accuses both the IG and the DPP of multiple infractions, including unlawfully entering his property and trying to arrest him without proper cause.

Wanjigi asserts in his affidavit that there is no valid reason for the attempt to arrest him or connect him to any alleged items found, nor for searching his home or pressing criminal charges against him.

He further argues that the authorities’ actions were intended to “embarrass and intimidate” him, potentially causing him significant psychological harm.

Wanjigi is asking the court to declare the actions of the DPP and IG unconstitutional, asserting that they violate his rights.

Moreover, Wanjigi is seeking compensation for any damages incurred as a result of the raid, holding the DPP and IG accountable.

The police raid on Wanjigi’s residence was part of a broader operation triggered by accusations that he was funding anti-government protests.

On Thursday, law enforcement officers searched Wanjigi’s Nairobi home after discovering an abandoned vehicle nearby.

Authorities allege that Wanjigi is linked to the Nane Nane protests on August 8, suggesting he was seen distributing funds to youths on Limuru Road to support the demonstrations.

The protests, predominantly led by Gen Z youth, have been active since June, with participants calling for improved governance.

These demonstrations have resulted in over 60 fatalities, many occurring during clashes with police forces.

Yesterday, Nairobi saw a significant police presence as officers used tear gas to disperse protesters on major streets like Tom Mboya Street, Moi Avenue, and Kimathi Street.

In response to the unrest, roadblocks were established on key routes leading to the Central Business District (CBD), including Waiyaki Way, Thika Road, Jogoo Road, and Uhuru Highway.
