A loud explosion was heard at an outdoor event attended by the prime minister of Japan.
Japanese media reports that a pipe-like object that appeared to be a smoke bomb was thrown at Fumio Kishida.
The leader was evacuated shortly after delivering a speech at a port in the city of Wakayama, where the incident occurred.

According to NHK, he took cover and remained safe throughout the incident; no other injuries were reported.

Footage from the scene showed uniformed officers pressing a man to the ground as the crowd fled. Later, police confirmed an arrest had been made.
In July of last year, the country’s longest-serving leader, former prime minister Shinzo Abe, was fatally shot while delivering a campaign speech outside a train station.
The assassination shook the nation and prompted a review of political security.
Mr. Kishida was in the neighborhood to support one of his party’s candidates in a local election.
