Janet Wanja, Iconic Malkia Strikers Star, Passes Away After Gallbladder Cancer Battle

Former Malkia Strikers star Janet Wanja has died, just weeks after her family revealed she was battling gallbladder cancer.

Her family confirmed her passing on the evening of Thursday, December 26, sharing that she lost her fight with the illness. โ€œThe family of Janet Wanja is deeply saddened to announce her passing after a courageous battle with cancer,โ€ read a statement.

The family expressed gratitude to Kenya Pipeline for fully covering Wanjaโ€™s medical expenses earlier in December following a public appeal for help.

Wanja, who served as a cornerstone of the Kenya Pipeline volleyball team from 2005 to 2019, was among the nationโ€™s most celebrated players. โ€œOur heartfelt thanks go to Kenya Pipeline for standing by us throughout this journey and ensuring she received all necessary medical support,โ€ the statement added.

Her untimely death has left the Kenyan sports community in shock, as many were hopeful she would overcome the diagnosis.

Harambee Stars forward Michael Olunga paid tribute, saying, โ€œGone too soon. Janetโ€™s contribution to volleyball and sports in Kenya was immense and unforgettable.โ€

President William Ruto also mourned the volleyball legend, describing her as a national hero. โ€œJanet Wanja, a disciplined and talented volleyball star, served our nationโ€™s sports with unmatched dedication. We pray for comfort for her family, friends, and the entire sports community during this tough time,โ€ he said.

Widely regarded as Kenyaโ€™s greatest female volleyball export, Wanjaโ€™s illustrious career began in 2004 when she represented the country at the Athens Olympics. A Mukumu Girls High School alumna, she later led the national team to victory at the Womenโ€™s African Volleyball Championship on home soil, where she was named โ€œBest Setter.โ€

After retiring, Wanja took on the role of fitness trainer for the Malkia Strikers. Her first assignment was at the East African Community Games in Kigali, Rwanda, in January 2024.

Despite her quiet battle with cancer, Wanja joined the Malkia Strikers at the Paris Olympics earlier this year. The team, however, exited early after losses to Brazil, Poland, and Japan.

In addition to her national team duties, Wanja also worked part-time as a gym instructor for Kenya Pipeline, her longtime club.

Wanja will be remembered for her indomitable spirit, exceptional talent, and lasting legacy in Kenyan volleyball.
