Is DP Gachagua Changing Tune On His ‘Govt Has Shareholders’ Remarks?
After much hue and cry from Kenyans of all walks of life from Cabinet Secretaries, opposition leaders, and even President William Ruto, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua seems to have moved away from his ‘government has shareholders’ remarks.
Speaking at the Nyeri Golf Club on Saturday in a meeting with business people, politicians, and professionals drawn from the Mt. Kenya region, Mr Gachagua appeared to move away from the controversial remarks.
“From where my boss and I sit, the elections are over, and we want Kenyans to work as one team for the development of our nation,” Gachagua said.
“During the last election, we were divided; 87 percent voted for President William Ruto and I and expressed their domestic rights as they should be, and 13 percent voted the other way.”
Gachagua stirred the hornet’s nest in February after comparing the government to a limited liability company, where those who voted for the government get the majority share of the national cake.
He said the Kenya Kwanza government would reward its staunch supporters and those who toiled to put the current government in office and give the least consideration to members of the opposition.
“This government is a company that has shares. Some owners have the majority of shares, and those with just a few, while others do not have any,” the country’s second-in-command said.

“You invested in this government and you must reap. You sowed, tilled, put manure, and irrigated, and now it is time to reap.”
The reaction was fast but hit a crescendo when the president waded into the matter recently.
“Let nobody tell you that you are out of this government. You pay taxes and you are Kenyans. This is your government. I will not allow any part of Kenya to be discriminated against in terms of development based on political affiliation,” he said.
“It is primitive and backward for anybody to imagine that any region of Kenya cannot get development on account of how they voted. That is not correct. I am the President of Kenya you are citizens of Kenya, so this is your government.”
Gachagua, who had insisted that the government has shareholders was less bullish on Saturday even saying that he has been one of the biggest proponents of uniting Kenyans since the elections.
“But now elections are over, I have been on record inviting the 13 percent so that we work together, for our region and our country,” he said.

Gachagua said the Kenya Kwanza administration is keen on engaging everyone in development or business regardless of how they voted.
“It is unnecessary to start looking back at how we voted, we want everybody to speak the same language and move in the same direction,” he added.
According to Gachagua, there is no enmity or quarrels in politics, and the parties involved should treat it like a sport.
He said that after the elections, he and Ruto made a conscious decision that, despite the tribulations in the lead-up to the last election, they would not hound anyone who had persecuted them during the campaigns.
“No one who hurt us has been pursued by KRA or the criminal justice system…everybody voted the way they did because that is a democracy,” he added.
“We now have one president, we have one government, let’s support him, let’s rally behind him and when the time comes for him to go through an audit you will have an opportunity to express yourself how you want.”
