Interior Ministry Recommends Establishment of Coroner General’s Office Amid Protests
The Ministry of Interior and National Administration has proposed to President William Ruto the creation of the Office of the Coroner General. This recommendation follows a series of recent deaths amid ongoing protests across the country.
A coroner is an official authorized by the government or judiciary to investigate the cause and circumstances of deaths.
“The Ministry of Interior has advised President William Ruto to commence the establishment of the Coroner General’s Office under the National Coroners Service Act of 2017. This office will investigate deaths, including those involving police interventions.”
The Coroner General’s Office aims to uphold accountability and transparency concerning suspicious deaths.
During the protests, security enforcement agencies were directed to show restraint, intervening only in particular situations.

The ministry stated that police may use necessary force when protests escalate to criminal activities such as rioting, looting, property damage, obstruction of traffic with roadblocks on major highways, and trespassing on critical infrastructure.
To enhance security, additional personnel were deployed in high-risk areas and locations critical to infrastructure protection.
Protest organizers were advised by the ministry to notify authorities in advance and show restraint during demonstrations.
The ministry emphasized vigilance against security threats from infiltrated protests, violence, and public disorder disruptions. A National Multi-Agency Command has been set up to coordinate security operations.
The ministry warned that individuals posing as protestors but engaging in criminal activities would face strict legal consequences.
Furthermore, the ministry pledged to pursue criminals involved in both recent and historical offenses.
