Interior CS Kindiki Silent on President Uhuru’s Alleged Ties to Mungiki Movement
Prof. Kithure Kindiki, minister of the interior, declined to comment on remarks linking former president Uhuru Kenyatta to the alleged resurgence of the Mungiki group on Wednesday.
This comes after Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua claimed on Monday that Uhuru was responsible for the return of the banned sect.
In his remarks, Gachagua asked, “What do you want in this country? You held the highest office in this nation; what else do you seek? You are the wealthiest man in this country, and you own the entire nation, including us; what else do you want? Hii watoto ya wenyewe unawaambia waende wapigane na polisi wauwawe, hii ni madharau gani kwa watoto ya waatu maskini?”
Without providing evidence, CS Kindiki stated in an address on the steps of Harambee House that there is indeed an emergence of what he termed cultural extremism.
He then mentioned Central Kenya and the Rift Valley as regions where these extremist groups are on the rise.
The head of the Department of the Interior declined to comment on the vice president’s remarks linking the former head of state to the aforementioned crime.

“I cannot comment on whether there is evidence linking the former president to crime…Prof. Kindiki responded as follows: “Anyone who is involved in encouraging crime, regardless of their social standing, has a date with me and my officers.”
The CS issued a stern warning to criminals who use culture and tradition as an alibi for committing illegal acts.
“We witnessed them chanting outside the DCI when we arrested a suspect (Maina Njenga), and their courage and demeanor are evident. “I reiterate that anyone who believes we can return to the time when terror groups hid behind culture and raped, murdered, and extorted our citizens is mistaken,” he said.
“Those who recruit naive youths to join proscribed organizations are Kenya’s enemies, and for Kenya’s sake, we will come after you and eliminate you. Despite my desire to decongest prisons, I have space for dangerous criminals.”
