On Monday, President William Ruto urged world leaders to mobilize resources to resolve obstacles to the Sustainable Development Goals.

When he co-chaired the United Nations General Assembly Sustainable Development Goals dialogue on Applying Science and Technology Innovation and Data for Transformative Action with Slovenian President Nataa Pirc Musar, the Head of State made these remarks.

Ruto argued in his speech that aligning global capital with sustainable development objectives was essential for climate-positive growth.

At a meeting attended by billionaires Bill Gates and Michael Bloomberg, the President stated that Africa had fallen behind in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals due to obstacles such as debt, inflation, climate disruptions, and conflicts.

“By enhancing Africa’s access to financing from global development capital, we will unlock the continent’s vast potential; its natural resources, arable land, and vibrant human capital,” he stated.

Before that, the Head of State convened a breakfast meeting at the United Arab Emirates UAE Mission to the United Nations under the direction of COP28 President and United Arab Emirates Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber.

During the meeting, President Ruto advocated for reforms to the global financial architecture, including debt restructuring and the strengthening of the International Financial Institutions (IFIs).

This, he explained, will enable countries in the global south to participate meaningfully in climate action and development.

“By eradicating unjust discrimination, we will foster shared prosperity and pave the way for the achievement of our climate action objectives and a sustainable future,” he added.

President of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Razan Al Mubarak, CEO of Crescent Enterprises Badr Jafar, CEO of BlackRock Larry Fink, Zimbabwean businessman Strive Masiyiwa, and Dr. Mo Ibrahim also witnessed the event.

Ruto has been a staunch advocate for climate action and organized the first African Climate Summit, which raised trillions of shillings for climate action on the continent.
