Inside Ruto-Uhuru’s Gatundu Talks
President William Ruto made a visit to his former boss, Uhuru Kenyatta, at his Gatundu residence on Monday, December 9.
This marked their second meeting within a month, following their earlier encounter in Embu during the consecration and installation of Bishop Peter Kimani Ndungโu.
During the visit, the State House revealed that President Ruto expressed gratitude to Uhuru for facilitating a seamless power transition after the 2022 Presidential elections.
“President Ruto acknowledged Uhuru Kenyatta for establishing a strong foundation that allowed the government to roll out key initiatives under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation agenda,” read a statement from State House.
Their discussion also touched on resolving pending court cases, which have stalled the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
In addition, the two leaders encouraged Kenyans to support Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Chairmanship, putting aside past political rivalries.
The timing of this meeting drew attention, coinciding with growing political rivalry in the Mount Kenya region.

Uhuruโs recent surge in public appearances, a notable shift from his earlier months of silence, added further intrigue. On Saturday, December 7, the former president attended the wedding of Damarie Saada Kalonzo, daughter of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Kalonzo, a vocal critic of Rutoโs administration, later expressed appreciation for Uhuruโs presence, underscoring their cordial relationship.
This meeting unfolded against the backdrop of speculation about a looming cabinet reshuffle, with several cabinet secretaries potentially at risk of dismissal.
Politically, Uhuruโs influence remains crucial, especially with just three years to the next general election. His alignment has become a strategic focus for leaders seeking dominance in the Mount Kenya region.
Kalonzo Musyoka, who has declared his intention to challenge Ruto in 2027, has identified Mount Kenya as a critical battleground in the race.
Following Rigathi Gachaguaโs impeachment, Kalonzo has voiced support for the former Deputy President, accusing the government of unfair treatment.
Both Gachagua and Kalonzo have recently criticized delays in reconstituting the IEBC, further amplifying their opposition to the administration.
