Impersonator in the Hot Seat: Fake ‘Lawyer’ Brian Mwenda at DCI HQ

Eric Theuri, the president of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), disclosed that Brian Mwenda, the university student accused of impersonating an attorney, is at the Directorate of Criminal Investigation Offices.

According to the head of the LSK, the DCI has amassed substantial evidence against the impostor while continuing to investigate.

“Brian Mwenda Njagi is now at DCI. We are going to ensure that he faces the full force of the Law. The evidence gathered so far points to several cases of forgery & identity theft,” Theuri wrote.

“Further inquiries are ongoing. We are working closely with the DCI team to conduct thorough & extensive investigations. This case will be a deterrent for future masqueraders.”

Mwenda had been practicing law without a license, even representing the former leader of the Mungiki tribe, Maina Njenga, in televised court proceedings.

When presenting the case to the DCI, Theuri disclosed the details of the phony lawyer’s scheme.

According to the president of the LSK, Mwenda assumed the identity of a genuine advocate named Brian Mwenda and posed as him.

The actual Mwenda realized something was amiss when he attempted to register for a certificate to practice law but was unable to access his account on the LSK portal.

An investigation into the matter disclosed the impersonation strategy of the fake attorney.

The imposter had taken over the account of attorney Mwenda, changed his login information, profile photo, and workplace, and then applied for and paid for a practicing certificate.

LSK claims that the phony attorney was unable to complete the application process because he was required to submit additional documents that he lacked.

“The LSK has commissioned an immediate review of the established protocols on change of membership credentials to enhance the internal approval mechanisms,” Theuri said at the time.
