I’m Ready to Go If You Have Better Plans – President Ruto Says After Deadly Protests

President William Ruto has strongly criticized the protests held on Wednesday, June 25, calling them a planned attempt to create chaos and damage the country.

Speaking during the World MSME Day event in Nairobi on Friday, President Ruto said the incidents were not peaceful protests but acts of violence masked as demonstrations.

Visibly frustrated, the President said he was willing to leave officeโ€”but only if those calling for his resignation presented a better and realistic plan for leading the country forward.

โ€œTo those saying โ€˜Ruto must go,โ€™ explain how you want me to go and what youโ€™ll do differently,โ€ he said. โ€œDonโ€™t destroy the countryโ€”bring a better idea, and if it makes sense, Iโ€™ll gladly step away and go into farming to support food production.โ€

He added that meaningful change should come through elections in 2027, not through street protests and aggressive slogans.

President Ruto condemned the destruction of property and looting that occurred during the protests, saying businesses worth billions were destroyed in a matter of hours. He stressed that hardworking traders and entrepreneurs were the biggest victims, waking up to find their livelihoods burned to the ground.

He also accused certain opposition leaders of encouraging young people to take to the streets, warning that those behind the unrest would face serious legal consequences.

To address the damage caused, Ruto directed Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to fast-track investigations, arrest the offenders, and ensure justice for affected business owners.

โ€œThose behind the violence and theft during the June 25 protests must be brought to justice quickly and without compromise,โ€ the President stated. โ€œI expect the police and all security agencies to move fast and uncover everyone responsible for this destruction.โ€
