The National Police Service has denied claims that it intends to arrest Rigathi Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), when he lands in Kenya.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday morning, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja said Gachaguaโ€™s return should be treated as a normal event, adding that he would be handled like any other Kenyan citizen.

Kanja assured the public that security in the country was under control and that the police were ready to deal with any threats in line with the law. He stressed, however, that Gachagua, like every other Kenyan, was not above the law and would face action if found linked to any crime.

โ€œGachaguaโ€™s arrival is nothing extraordinary. He will be treated just like any other Kenyan returning home,โ€ Kanja said.

He added that the police serviceโ€™s main role is to protect citizens and ensure law and order, reminding the public that anyone breaking the law would face legal consequences.

Gachagua is expected to land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi on Thursday afternoon after a six-week tour in the United States.

The police chiefโ€™s statement came shortly after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen warned DCP members against causing disruptions during their leaderโ€™s arrival. Murkomen said the government would take firm action against any opposition figures who mobilize supporters to disturb businesses in Nairobi.

โ€œThe last time he was here, there were protests that disrupted peace. This time, we are prepared to protect Kenyans,โ€ Murkomen stated.

In response, DCP leaders accused the government of planning to use hired goons to interfere with Gachaguaโ€™s welcome. Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala claimed that Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and CS Murkomen had allegedly held night meetings to organize the plan.

Malala further alleged that Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi and former Nairobi Mayor George Aladwa were also involved, claiming the supposed group was tasked with looting property and causing harm to citizens.
