If You Support Doctors’ Strike, Pay The Money They’re Asking For – Ruto Tells Leaders
President William Ruto has criticized leaders who endorse the doctors’ strike, suggesting that they are seeking favor with the Kenyan populace.
On Wednesday, President Ruto, addressing the third National Wage Bill Conference at the Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi, suggested that those advocating for the healthcare workers’ strike should proceed to fulfill their demands for payment.
He proceeded to suggest that the nation is currently facing more pressing issues, thereby disregarding the concerns raised by the doctors.
โIf you support the strike then pay the money they are asking for. We must stop chasing what is popular, and instead go for what is right,โ Ruto said.
โWe have a doctorsโ challenge. We can hardly pay them because we have said there are real issues we want to deal with. You have leaders, like Governors, who support the doctorsโ strike.โ
The leader emphasized that leaders must prioritize serving the nation and demonstrating leadership rather than solely seeking popularity.

โWe must get to the point where those of us who are privileged to be leaders must be ready to lead, serve, and make a difference and not necessarily to be popular,โ he added.
“The challenge we have had as a country is that we all know what is right. We have documented studies, programs, and resolutions, but when it is time to implement it becomes difficult.”
Furthermore, he criticized leaders who oppose the shutdown of bars due to the problem of illegal alcohol, suggesting that their motives are to gain favor among Kenyan citizens.
Ruto’s comments follow a week after leaders from the opposition Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party warned that they would support doctors in their strike if the government doesn’t address their grievances.
โThis regime is failing its citizens. Weโre consulting, and if they do not stop this strike, we as Kenyans will be free to join…(because) the only language they (government) understands ni kuenda kwa mitaa,โ said Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on April 9, 2024.
