Ichung’wah Reveals Genesis of His Beef With Gachagua

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, for the first time, addressed the origins of his tense relationship with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Tuesday.

During an interview on Spice FM, Ichung’wah shared that their discord began when Gachagua started advocating for the One Man, One Shilling, One Vote campaign.

Ichung’wah expressed that Gachagua had unrestricted access to senior government officials, which gave him ample opportunity to voice his opinions directly. However, instead of using these channels, Gachagua chose to publicly criticize the government’s efforts, fueling division.

“We were introduced to the concept of One Man, One Vote, One Shilling,” Ichung’wah said. “I even questioned why, with all the executive powers, we’re speaking publicly about it rather than implementing the necessary changes internally. There were proper channels, including cabinet subcommittees, that could have addressed the issue.”

Ichung’wah went on to critique Gachagua’s lack of public support for government policies, highlighting how President William Ruto, when serving as Deputy President, consistently defended the government, regardless of political challenges.

He also shed light on Gachagua’s selection as UDA’s running mate, noting that regional leaders advised Gachagua to soften his abrasive approach, as it was isolating both politicians and the public.

“Even Gachagua himself had to reflect and improve his interpersonal skills. His aggressive and vindictive nature has alienated many,” Ichung’wah added.

The ongoing rift between the two has seen Gachagua accusing Ichung’wah of undermining Mt. Kenya’s unity, while Ichung’wah has blamed Gachagua for promoting tribal politics.

Recently, Ichung’wah led 48 Mt. Kenya MPs in recognizing Interior CS Kithure Kindiki as their main connection to the Executive, a move seen as a clear rejection of Gachagua’s leadership.

These MPs have criticized Gachagua’s divisive style, claiming it has distanced the Mt. Kenya region from the rest of the country.

Meanwhile, Gachagua’s supporters, including Embakasi Central MP Mejja Donk, have fired back at Ichung’wah, accusing him of sabotaging Gachagua’s political ambitions. Mejja Donk, during a rally, said, “Someone is trying to divide Mt. Kenya. If a dog is barking, someone is holding the leash. This message is for that person—control your puppets or forget about Mt. Kenya.”
