How CCTV Footage Led to Arrest of Ugandan Murder Suspect in Nairobi
A fugitive convicted of murdering his girlfriend in Uganda was effectively apprehended by Ugandan and Kenyan authorities working in tandem.
The escapee had managed to elude capture for over 15 months but was ultimately apprehended at a local hotel in Nairobi on Tuesday evening.
A flight delay prevented him from leaving the country, prompting him to check into a hotel temporarily.
To elude law enforcement, the man changed his name and altered certain facial and physical characteristics, according to reports from Uganda’s media outlets.
CCTV cameras documented his presence at the hotel, allowing officers to positively identify him as the wanted man.
“The CCTV footage at the airport identified him after he was flagged as a wanted criminal on the Interpol database,” Kakensa Media reported.
In May 2022, he was found guilty of the 2015 murder of his 19-year-old Makerere University medical student fiancée, whose body was discovered in a Lugazi sugar plantation.

After his bail request was denied in November 2021, he disappeared from the authorities’ surveillance.
To locate him, Ugandan law enforcement requested assistance from international security agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States.
The suspect, a physician, will be extradited to Uganda to serve out his sentence.
“Arrangements are in place to hand him over to Interpol Uganda who will thereafter hand him to the Mukono High Court in liaison with the office of the DPP, CID, and Kampala Metropolitan police,” Ugandan police spokesperson Fred Enanga told the press.
According to reports, the convict confessed to the murder of his girlfriend in 2015 and led the detectives to the crime site.
Before severing her throat with a surgical blade, he told detectives, he strangled the victim.
Since 2015, the Jinja Magistrates Court has transferred his case to the Mukono High Court.
The offender employed several strategies to avoid appearing in court, including feigning illness.
