High Court Tells IEBC to Clear Linda Kiome for Meru Deputy Governor Post
The High Court has directed the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to take immediate action to clear Linda Gakii Kiome for the role of Deputy Governor of Meru County. This court order breathes new life into the nomination process, which has been delayed for several weeks.
In a detailed judgment, Justice Stephen Githinji instructed IEBC CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan to appoint a returning officer in Meru County. This step is required for Linda Kiome to be officially cleared by the electoral body. The judge gave the IEBC seven days to carry out the order.
If the IEBC fails to act within that timeframe, the court ruled that Linda Kiome will automatically be considered cleared. This means the Meru County Assembly can continue with her vetting and approval without further delays.
Kiome was nominated by Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia, who took office after the impeachment of former Governor Kawira Mwangaza. Governor M’Ethingia selected Kiome as his deputy to help restore stability in the county’s leadership.
However, the process stalled after the IEBC did not confirm whether Kiome met the leadership and integrity standards under Chapter Six of the Constitution. This created uncertainty and raised concerns about possible political interference or unfair procedures.

In his ruling, Justice Githinji confirmed that Kiome’s nomination followed the law and criticized the IEBC for delaying the process without a valid legal reason.
“The court cannot ignore such injustice,” said Justice Githinji. “Under Article 23 of the Constitution, this court has the power to ensure justice and protect citizens’ rights.”
Legal experts praised the court’s decision, saying it sets a strong example for how government institutions should act. The ruling reminds bodies like the IEBC that they must follow the law and be fair when handling public appointments.
If the IEBC obeys the court’s order, the Meru County Assembly will begin the vetting process to review Linda Kiome’s qualifications and hold a vote to confirm her as Deputy Governor.
Political observers say the court’s firm ruling is a step toward better leadership and could fast-track Meru County’s political transition. Now, attention turns to how the IEBC will respond to the court’s clear instructions.
