Heartbreak in the Wetang’ula Family: National Assembly Speaker Loses Beloved Mother
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has lost his mother.
Mama Anne Nanyama Wetang’ula, who was also the mother of Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, passed away on Friday.ย ย
Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka shared the news on his official X account, describing Mama Nanyama as a “remarkable community mobilizer and mentor.”
“Her compassion, wisdom, and selfless deeds positively impacted countless lives. During this difficult time, may her family find strength and solace in the cherished memories of her extraordinary life and the enduring love she leaves behind,โ Lusaka stated in his message of condolence.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi expressed his sorrow, noting that Mama Nanyama’s passing has brought immense grief to Kenyaโs Parliament and the nation at large.

“Khukhu leaves a lasting legacy as the matriarch of a family that has given Kenya exemplary leaders and as a mentor to many who knew her. I extend my heartfelt condolences to Rt Hon Wetangโula, Hon Wanyonyi, and their family. May God grant them strength during this time of loss, and may her soul rest in peace,” Kingi said.
Kanduyi MP John Makali also mourned the loss, praising Mama Anne for her strong moral values that shaped two influential leaders.
“Speaker Moses Wetangโula, Timothy Wanyonyi MP Westlands, and the entire Wetangโula family, I am deeply saddened by the passing of your mother, Khukhu Anne Nanyama Wetangโula. The moral foundation she laid has produced leaders who serve our nation with excellence. My thoughts are with you during this challenging time,” Makali conveyed.
Wetang’ula, who became Speaker of the National Assembly in 2022, previously served as Minister for Trade before being elected Bungoma Senator in 2013. He was re-elected in 2017 and 2022 but stepped down to take the Speaker position.ย ย
His brother, Tim Wanyonyi, first elected as Westlands MP in 2017, retained his seat in 2022, and has expressed aspirations to run for Nairobi Governor in 2027
